HOMEWORK: Why Less is Best
TeachToo Talk: Why Less Homework Is Best
I've posted this in large letters to make sure you all take notice and read. Listen up!
Let’s be honest... After nearly 8 hours of school, our students are tired. Their brains have been working hard all day, learning new things, solving problems, and staying focused. When the school day ends, what they really need is a brain break, not a pile of homework.
We often hear that homework builds responsibility, but let’s think about it from a real-world point of view: Most adults don’t like bringing work home after a full day on the job—and kids aren’t any different.
🧠 Why Less Homework Makes Sense
- Kids need time to rest and reset. Play outside, family time, and creative activities are just as important as academics.
- It doesn’t always equal learning. Tired brains don’t absorb new skills well, and frustration can lead to burnout.
- Quality over quantity. A short 20 minute review or reading time is more meaningful than busywork.
Many students don't even have help at home with homework because parents are busy at work or too tired after work. And don't get me started on the price of hiring a tutor. So how about we give our students the same grace we give ourselves? Less homework doesn’t mean less learning—it means better balance. When we respect their time and well-being, we support their overall success in and out of the classroom.
Just remember to do what's best for your student. 😇
