TeachToo: Boost Decoding Skills with Nonsense Words (Free Download!)

Looking for a fun and effective way to help your students become stronger readers? Try using pseudowords  for decoding practice! These silly, made-up words may sound funny—but they pack a serious punch when it comes to building phonics skills.

And to make things even easier, I’ve created a FREE slide show you can download and use in your classroom right away! 🎉

What Are Nonsense Words?

Nonsense words are not real words—they don’t have meanings—but they’re made up of real letter-sound combinations. For example:

  • bep

  • mib

  • tup

  • zod

They follow regular phonics rules and help students practice decoding without relying on memorization or guessing. Please locate the nonsense word slide deck in my blog and download it for free!

Why Use Nonsense Words for Reading Practice?

Nonsense words are a great tool because they:

Strengthen decoding skills – Students have to sound them out, not recognize them.
Reveal true phonics mastery – You’ll quickly see who can apply letter-sound knowledge.
Prepare students for unfamiliar words – Perfect for building confidence when they see new vocabulary.

How to Use Nonsense Words in the Classroom

Here are a few simple and fun ways to use nonsense words:

🗣️ 1. Read & Repeat

Flash a nonsense word on the screen. Ask students to sound it out and say it aloud.

🎯 2. Real or Not?

Mix nonsense and real words. Ask students to sort them into two piles—great for review!

📝 3. Write It Out

Say a nonsense word out loud and have students write it down, listening for each sound.

⏱️ 4. Speed Rounds

Set a timer and see how many nonsense words students can decode in 60 seconds.
