Why UFLI Decodable Passages Are Perfect for Emergent Readers

During my second year of teaching my reading specialist introduced me to some great resources from UFLI which is the University of Florida Learning Institute. There were so many resources I could use in my classroom for every aspect of literacy. Recently, as a new interventionist, I began to make use of their decodable passages. If you're teaching young readers just starting their reading journey, UFLI decodable passages are a game-changer. Designed with a strong phonics foundation, these passages are simple, purposeful, and perfectly aligned with how emergent readers learn best.

💣 Why UFLI Passages Work?

💥Phonics-Aligned: Each passage focuses on specific letter-sound patterns, giving students the chance to apply what they’ve learned in a meaningful way.
💥Builds Confidence: Because students can successfully decode most or all of the words, they feel successful—and want to keep reading.
💥Supports Fluency & Comprehension: With repeated exposure to targeted patterns and high-frequency words, readers grow in both speed and understanding.
💥Great for Small Groups & Intervention: These passages are short, focused, and easy to use in any setting—from whole-group lessons to 1:1 support.

Whether you’re working with struggling readers, beginning readers, or students who just need extra practice, UFLI decodable passages are a must-have tool in your literacy toolbox.
